hello all I am replacing my 180 gal display with 50gal sump and hob overflow to 320 gal with 125 refugium sump. my question what overflow to use. Tank is not drilled so m am unsure to drill bottom or drill back for synergy reef overflow. thinking of 4000gph turn over so looking a 2 inch bulkhead. thanks for all input

I've never used that type of overflow. But there are plenty of videos on YouTube with instructions for drilling a tank.

thank you for your reply but I have know problem drilling tank i want good input on weather to drill for bottom overflow or out the back overflow

I would think you'd get better gas exchange if you drilled the bottom and installed a corner or box overflow.

ok I have decided to drill bottom of tank now onto what standpipe durso or herbie

next question how lbig or I am assuming 2 standpipes to get 4000gph

Depends on your scaping. I'd go for max flow. Where are you locating the overflow? Corner(s), centered?

Some tanks have tempered bottoms. Better make sure it is not tempered, because if it is, you will shatter the bottom glass once you start drilling it. You cannot drill tempered glass.

Personally, if it were my tank and I wanted that kind of flow rate, I would go with TWO of the 20" Synergy Reef Overflows (rated at 2500 gph each). The 20" will have three 1½" drains in the external box. Corner drains take up a lot of valuable real estate inside of the tank. The Synergy overflow has a very small footprint inside of the tank and won't be as noticeable as two corner overflows. Will also give you 40" of surface skimming. Just my 2¢...

I agree with Fin. I would definitely look at the Synergy reef overflows. I have one of the 16 inch models on my 80 gallon reef and love it so far. I actually opted out of the corner overflow stock on this system and drilled the tank myself just so I could install this overflow with a beananimal overflow setup. If you want to see it in action, go check out Mr Saltwater Tank TV's 450 gallon tank swap youtube video (you should be able to just google it. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the direct link). It shows him installing it on his new tank. They are a bit pricy but they work great in my experience and have a very clean look to them and use up very minimal space inside the tank. You will need to add some extra space behind the tank, however, as it has an external overflow box.

Good thread. I'm thinking of a tank build myself so I'll be tagging along.

Read bean animal is super silent compared to durso and has fail safe compared to herbie.

this is the opinions I wanted thank you all, I do like the ideal of a small footprint in my tank and having plumbing out the back of my tank not much concern as my 180gal is a HOB overflow which I am fine with. Was just thinking since I am doing tank change why not drill (yes I do know you cant drill temp glass already called the tank company to make sure) for internal overflow. No matter which way I go I do know I want a 4000 gph turnover, so if the durso link is correct 1 2in bulkhead should flow approx. 2300 to 2400 gph
