I know I would have to add water to see if it will hold water but before I even bother, can anyone here tell me if it’s worth trying? Size: 60 x 18 x 18 ~ 85G ~ 1/2” Starphire glass ☹️

Was it delivered chipped? That would tick me off. At least check with the manufacturer.

Looking forward to seeing what experts have to say. I guess if anything at least it’s not affecting the seam.

if you took pics and it looked like that right out of the box then definitely ask for a replacement

i wouldn't put water in it.

i had to go through all kinds of headache once but now i take a pic of the box when it arrives then several pics as i open with the final pics of the tank and edges.

last two tanks i cut the box open on the seams and folded the cardboard out (like a flower) to show i had not removed the tank and the pics are exactly as received.

Well the tank sitting on what looks like concrete and the chipped piece laying next to it with some smaller pieces of glass makes me think the OP may have dropped the tank on that corner. I hope not and that it was delivered damaged. My condolences either way but I would be hesitant to use it with that chip in the bottom corner. At the top maybe but I'm not a tank builder or expert. Just depends on your risk tolerance I suppose :thinking-face:

A local club member bought a Chinese made tank and it came in chipped that was concealed with packaging. He didn't trust it so he sold it to me for $100. I filled it and it sat in my garage for two weeks and never leaked. I used it for two years and then sold it to a friend, who after a few years sold it again. I think the tank was moved like five times and never leaked. Fill it up and let it sit.

Thats not gonna leak at all. It’s the outside portion chipped nothing close to the seam.
still pretty risky since even the smallest chip can migrate the tiniest crack after the weight of water is added. Then Blooosh! you come home to an empty tank and ruined flooring.

if i chipped it myself and had no recourse to get a replacement i would try wet buffing that area with a lot of ceruim oxide to take the jaggedness out of it and then see if there are any spider cracks. if smooth and no cracks i may give it a go with water.

Wow!

I’d run it personally… and just get some corner gaurds from Home Depot in black and silicone them over the corners so it’s not unsightly… makes it less cleaning down the line also for algae built up in the corners.

A neighbor was helping me bring it inside and he let go too soon. I’m so upset. Bought this tank as an “urgency”, not an emergency yet, but my 90G Waterbox is leaning and it’s making me nervous. Been cycling my rocks, storing tank water etc … ugh. Thanks for your input guys.

You do realize that nobody can tell you definitively that it will or will not fail. That somebody else ran a chipped tank without issue is mostly meaningless. At the very least I’d flip it over to see if there’s any damage the bottom. Glass looks ‘crushed’ at the bottom edge.

I would not trust it.

This is structural based on size and location of chip is of high risk for leak or pressure damage when filled. Pic suggests this was damaged after delivery?
Not worth filling from what picture shows

so sorry this happened to you. my gut would be turning! My neighbor helped me to get my 75 on the stand and almost lost his end but he got his knee underneath and saved it. my heart almost fell out of my mouth when i saw him losing it.

maybe the MFG can help out with a new pane for a decent price. Never know.

Please explain how it’s structural when the chip is nowhere even close to a seam…

I had a similar chip on my sump that happened during transport. Decided to repair it with 2 part epoxy for glass and it worked well however my sump has to deal with less pressure but your chip doesn't come close to the seam so I would fill it up and test it out if there is no warranty or anything you can fall back on.

Would you trust a 1/8th inch piece of glass to hold back 800 odd pounds even if the seam was intact? How about 1/16th? How about 1/32nd? Guessing there’s a reason glass is a certain thickness and it’s not just the seams.

Having repaired over 70 tanks at my LFS, and collaborating with engineers from All Glass aquarium- there is a margin or closeness to the seam that makes the tank weaker under water pressure and its your tank. By all means , fill it if you wish and you will be the first to know. You say its no where near the seam- You are going by silicone and not the actual joint where the two pieces of glass meet.
You would know by asking yourself- If this is on display at an LFS- would you buy it and set it up?
Its unfortunate and is a risk. Disasters with water seem to happen at 3am when we are sleeping. Its your call.
