New tank cycling

After only 1 day, getting zero on the tests is probably pretty normal.

I would intoduce some form of ammonia to start the cycle (little bit of food, etc).

With your live rock and live sand, you may not experience a huge cycle.

i put some dead shrimp like 2 weeks ago.

I would ghost feed the tank for three to five days (just a pinch of flakes) and test the parameters. If there is no ammonia reading or nitrite reading, you are good to add your first additions.

I too just started a 40 gallon with the same type filter and am waiting on my cloudiness to settle out before putting anything in there. I have a 4 year old live rock on hold and will introduce a fish a little later. I used deionized water and live sand. Is it necessary right now to leave the light on for the live sand 12 hours or not really until I put in my live rock?

Idk the proper way but I left my light on and now in have diatoms where the light shined the most

suprise guest from live rock

I bought about 20 pounds of live rock from a local store Friday. It had been in an office tank they serviced for a few years. The company moved a year ago and decided last week not to have it shipped, so I was there at the right time to buy it. The rock had beautiful green and red algae on it and many suprises inside. We have a few baby starfish that have come out and a baby spiny starfish of sometype. We also have a few common mushrooms that have crawled out to the surface and several small feather dusters, as well as, a small bright red hermit crab. It's been very exciting! We put in a very small yellowtail damsel and Talbot Damsel.

With my tank being new is there sometype of supplemental feeding I should be doing or is the life on the rock enough for these suprise guest?

Thanks for the advice,
Jerry

i let the shrimp completely rot and break down, this may not be the best idea but i let the tank cycle for 6 or 7 weeks befor there was any livestock put in. The best thing you can do is take your time and not rush any thing. The slower the better. Even after you tank is cycled it is still very sensitive to Biological changes like adding a bunch of fish at once is not good. Start slow go slow and you should have good results with your tank.
As for your surprise guest they will all be fine if you are feeding the fish you put in there. the hermits starfish will scavenge for food or fish waste. the shrooms will just need a little light to live they produce there own food thru light. Feather dusters are filter feeders and will be fine also. Sounds like your tank is coming along pretty good. The filter your using the biowheel one. i used on my 20g and it kept the water so clean and evey thing was happy. If you havent look into chemipure or purgien both i use and really feel like they help out my tank a lot
