Simple questions. I am buying a 125 acrylic and don’t have the tools to drill. Can I just run a line through the top to setup a sump below? Kind of like typical canister filters?

Are you saying you want to use HOB (hang on back) technology? Yes its an option

You might ask around locally and find someone to modify tank before it goes into use. Easier to do that when dry before livestock goes in but entirely up to you. Some never convert to drilled...

You might have some difficultly given it's an acrylic aquarium. Some have cutouts for hang on stuff, some don't.

That said, a $20 used corded drill and a wood hole saw from HD would be a couple of good long term investments for the hobby :)

Thank you, I have used AIOs only in the past, but I think after some thinking I am going to search for a pre-drilled used tank with a sump already as take advantage of someone leaving the hobby so I don't need to use a U shape HOB component.

That is EXACTLY what I did! Both my main tanks are used I found locally. With people moving up to new tanks, they'll sell their other tanks. I waited until I found one not completely stripped of bits going into their new tank. Leaving the hobby is even better because they'll throw in all sorts of cool things. My 180g was someone leaving, so we still joke he bought lots of great things to sell cheap to me. My new 60g was someone upgrading to new (so it was stripped of pump - that one was on FaceBook MarketPlace). Ideally find something turn key. Fingers crossed.
