New tank for Sohal tang or not?

Honestly, regardless of which tank you get there won’t be more weight on one area than a 200-250lb man standing. If your floor can not handle that you may be in trouble!

I haven’t worried about the floors since I had an engineer explain to me that most of my concerns were unnecessary. I’m no engineer so I don’t know how valid that is but just to enter in to discussion.

Regarding the home, 8 foot tank should be minimum for a tang that size, let alone with the other large tankmates. That’s a lot of very large fish! I love Sohal tangs and second that it’s great to have a large one that is docile :)
Thank you, I always appreciate your advice. Do you think the Sohal has HLL? Very small area less than cm on head? Also what do think about moving Sohal to 300 reef with the other six tangs? The 300 is only 6” also. We are looking at 8’ tanks now too. Thank you for helping. I appreciate your opinion. This Sohal was in a 75 gal most almost ten yrs with previous owner. Then to LFS in 120. We adopted to our 120 knowing we were upgrading when 300 was done.our 120 cracked end to end and we ordered the 180 emergently and set up in three days so the Sohal didn’t die. We put her in our 90 that was still up from moving the to 300. We have done a few upgrades. The Sohal grew when we put her in the 180. She is beautiful and dog like!

She might do OK in the reef but at that size and the tangs being smaller it is a risk— and she has to be a very dirty fish, not so good for your coral if you keep coral that require low nutrients.

I don’t see definitive HLLE above it’s hard to tell can you get a better photo?

In any event, clean water, soaking food in zoecon, lots of nori and more than one type, and feeding high quality frozen foods will help. I feed my fish red and green ocean nutrition and I don’t have any HLLE to speak of even on my Hippo — but it can still happen. My water is dirty.

Also using dusty carbon can “cause” HLLE. I use high quality large “pellet” carbon without all the dust, and rinse any dust off before it goes in.

Thank you for your reply. The glass is dirty because tomorrow is tank cleaning day but here is another zoomed picture of Sohal.
We feed red and green nori 4 days a week when we are home. We feed krill daily. And Hikari-spiraling/ brine shrimp and Hikari-mysis shrimp small and large mixed together. We also rotate clams on the half shell, silversides and rod’s reef predator blend food. They always get the mysis/spiraling/brine blend and one of the others also and krill. So three foods all at once 2xdaily to give all the fish what they like and the eel. We do give large pellets on some days because the Koran is very picky eater and will only eat pellets some days. The Sohal eats all of it even whole silversides and will take them from the eel. She is very fat! Probably too fat which I wonder could be causing some of the skin problems (whole) I see at 2• on the picture. My husband only using large pellet carbon too and rinses it.
Thank you, I will not try to add her to the reef. I think it could be a disaster to a well balanced reef that is finally blooming and tangs getting along. We had 11 tangs in reef but naso died and we removed the powder brown, scopa, tomini and purple due to fighting. Finally have neutral mix of 6 in the 300. I agree I shouldn’t mess with that stability. Our purple tang and tomini got put in the 93 together and are doing well and much better than being bullied in the 300. We lost the powder brown :( to velvet in the 93 when we set it up even with quarantine. The scopa is happy in the 180 with Sohal.
We are looking for a 8’ tank and possibly of building one custom too. Thank you for your help again.

I and others I’m sure, hope you score the 8’ tank quickly... IMO the 180 is way over crowded and you can chastise me for saying so but those are a lot of large fish for that size tank... I wouldn’t put that stock load in my 255g... with as long as you’ve had those fish, I hope there is a happy outcome. Best of luck for you and your Sohal which should have many more years to live.

Thank you. We are looking for the right tank and right price of course as well where to put it! We hope to give these fish a happy home and take good care of them. So far they have all been healthy until I saw this on my Sohal. We found a nice 7’ 265 gal perfect price but we think not enough room? Anyone?

I don’t see HLLE, it could be the start of “hole in head” disease which is a parasite but I wouldn’t draw that conclusion yet. Just observe and monitor it if it doesn’t worsen marginally you’re fine. Maybe it’s just age spots like we get :D

I’d wait for 8-10 footers. A full-sized sohal really needs a 10 foot tank but an 8 foot is a minimum, IMO. It gets expensive I know! LOL!

Thank you. We found 8’, 360gal. Talking to owner about price and moving it. Will see if it will work! Hopefully. The owner has several fish he is trying to get rid of. Moorish idol and large naso. Do you think we could put the same size naso with the Sohal and how would Moorish idol get along with the triggers and puffer? Just curious. I will have to look up hole in head.
Our LFS owner who is awesome said he thought it was age spots actually! He sold the Sohal 12+ yrs ago and the owners never upgraded tank so he took it back and then we took it! Fell in Lov with Sohal at the store and no one else wanted it. Everyone is always scared of the Sohal it seems! My Koran is actually the about the same age and a lot meaner. Thank you for your help.

They might mingle just fine, some idol hold their own they’re not exactly docile fish. They don’t really chase or beat on fish but some don’t take any crap, either. A large idol might be fine. Naso will likely be fine.

Good luck! I’m not a Koran angel fan, personally.

Thank you,
I don’t know if we really want anymore large fish but don’t want them to go homeless or to the wrong tank like our 180! The owner had been trying to regime for some time but wants a large price for them.
Will see what we can do for price with tank and system. I really appreciate your help. I am thinking this might be hole in head like you said for the Sohal? Will keep watching for a bit. If get worse will look at possible treatment.

Hello! We found a perfect tank in Chicago tonight. We paid a deposit and will hopefully pick up in a couple of weeks. It is 8’, 300gal! Hope this will be big enough it is probably the max size that will fit in our small Wi home. Now just have to figure out how to move the tank from Chicago to Green Bay and swap over all our fish! We are super excited to help our fish and give them a better home! The couple we are buying from have been reefing for 30 yrs and upgraded from 300 to 600gal. The tank is immaculatant. Better than we could have hoped for!

Sounds like a great find! Well-done!

Good on you for caring this much about your fish :)

We firmly believe that the animals and fish in our care are dependent on us and we bought them or rescued them, they are our responsibility to care for and give the best home we can!
Funny story, a couple of months ago my husband stopped at PetCo to get dog food on the way home and went by the fish isle just to look. Which we try not to do because it is so sad to see all their diseased Fish. But he actually saw the tiniest one spot foxface. About 1” and it had ick already. So my husband bought it even with the ick. We brought it home and put it in quarantine and slowly treated for the ick! We put this little guy in our 93 but will go into the 300 reef someday. It is healthy and thriving and eats like a horse! We love this little guy!

I really appreciate your help. Thank you. Will post updates once we get the tank.
