I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about Temperate (Coldwater Saltwater) tanks. If so just post on this, i really would love to set one up!

Ive heard they are unique, but alot of trouble and nowhere near as pretty.

Two "types" of habitats that are commonly lumped as one in the hobby would be temperate reef (65-70 F) and coldwater reef (45-50 F). Coldwater reefs require 1"+ thick acrylic (even on a 50 gal) to keep it from "sweating", like a pop can on a hot day. Particularly for coldwater reef, they require a very efficient and generally larger than a normal reef filtration system as biological filtration happens much slower in these tamps. I run a temperate reef with fairly normal filtration means with no issues. Obviously both require a chiller, or multiple chillers.

Of course, beuaty is in the eye of the beholder, but I don't know many people who would say tanks such as this aren't pretty:

Yeah, i was going to see if i could get a 30 gallon custom 1/2 acrylic (to prevent sweating) and get a small chiller ,I found one on nanoreefsupply.com. I was also going to get a small reefoctopus to put in a sump that would be under the tank. I would also get a small wave-maker to make it seem more natural in the tank. In a Temperate Tank the prettiest things I've seen were Jewel Anemones the are like a coldwater version of zoas. The fish aren't as pretty though, but i think some of the inverts are really pretty. Also alot of macroalgae goes into thees tanks. I just think it would be cool to have both the tropical aspect and the temperate aspect in my home.

I've read on cold water reefs when doing my research. What turned me to warmer water was the less efficient biological filtration, and the $$$ of the chillers. I'd be real interested if you'd update from time to time how your progress is.

I will if i even start the tank, because money is an issue. I dont know were i would get the live stock though.
