Hi,
I'm new to the hobby so if possible would like to get some help with whatever is growing on my rock.
I just want to make sure it's safe for the aquarium and its inhabitants. Some is gray. Some is like a turquoise color. Some is black, Light Green, and red(coraline?).

Thanks

Try and scrape it with your fingernail if it comes of that’s a negative if it doesn’t it’s a good shame it’s some type of coraline algae remember coraline algae practically calcifies itself to whatever it’s growing on and a lot if other species of algae will not grow in top of it also try and point a powerhead or circ. Pump at the point and see if it withers away

I’m not an expert but I have had a saltwater tank for 17 years now. I know that any green algae or dark black , is not good and it means your nutrients are off. The best algae in a tank is the pink. Nothing grows on it. Check your water regularly and make sure , if you have fish already in the tank, do not over feed. Also do not overpopulate.
How big is your tank and for how long has been running?

Hi,
It's been running just about 4 months.
36 Bow front
25 lbs live rock and some of the ceramic filter media in canister.
10% water change 1 a week.
Clean the canister 1 a week.
Clean hob 1 a week
Salinity 23
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0 - .5
Ph 8.0 maybe little higher 8.2
Went through the diatom bloom about 2 months ago. Nothing since.
Very little algae growth on glass. Wipe a little off every other week.
2 clowns
1 diamond Goby
1 orchids dotty back
1 six line
1 skunk shrimp
6 trachus snails
10 red legged hermits
Tank is crystal clear unless the Goby goes nuts.lol..love that fish.
Tank Doesn't smell at all.

Thanks for the help

Good question asked by Somuchflo99.
One more thing , how big are your fish ? Keep in mind, the rule is one inch /gal of water.
Also, I just remembered, what made a difference in the quality of algae in my tank was the brand of salt I used. Personally, I prefer the Red Sea. I didn’t like Instant Ocean too much. A lot of green algae was growing while I was using it.

I feed twice a day. Pretty slowly. Wait till they eat it all then add more. Some falls but not much. Give them some micro pellets late afternoon. I give it to them slowly. Figured the hermit crabs would help take care of the scraps.
I'm using instant ocean. Was thinking of changing so I could get some frags.
Clowns 2"
Orchid .75"
Goby 2.25"
6 line 2"

Also I dont have a rodi system so from what Ive read I will deal with algae no matter what.
I couldn't scrape any of the turquoise stuff off. The black came off but not easily. There is a very little bit.

Feed once a day and each fish should not eat more than their eye size. They don’t really need a lot of food. That black slime forms when there is too much organic wastes and nutrients in the tank. You probably don’t think you overfeed them but thats the cause of your problem. I would also buy some beneficial bacteria and add to the tank. Four months is not that long for a tank to mature.
Also do 20% water changes ( no more) regurarely untill you get rid of the algae. Change the filters but never clean the ceramic in the canister. That’s where your beneficial bacteria colonies grow.
You might want to buy also a filter that takes out the nutrients and a carbon filter. Look for the filters you can cut to the size you need for your canister. Make sure to change them often.

Ok.
Thanks

Maybe switch to more sources of live food such as copepods, I'd seed the tank a bit and you can stop feeding for a few days, let the algae grow a bit, then scrape off the bad stuff (because then it has sucked the bad stuff out of the tank)
