New Tank Need Help

Hi, was thinking about setting up a 20 gallon long or high tank (no corals) and I need help on what I specifically need to set it up. Also, on a budget to hopefully keep the items under 200$. Some sources I have found say you need a HOB filter while some say all you need is live rock and a Power head. So what do I need specifically for filter wise and other necessities for setting it up and what gph is the best. Also, what would be some good beginner stocking options too?

You’ll need both live rock and a filter.
This hobby can be very cheap if you keep it simple. Look on Craigslist to find cheap and good deals on equipment/livestock.
You’ll need:
Rocks: you can use dry rock to save on money
Sand is optional
Lighting: Any type of lighting will work with a fish only tank
Some type of filter: quaclear HOB filters are really good and worth the money
For wavemaker anything from 300-500 gph work. I’ve used this one and had no problems with it.

check petco. They price match and discount for picking up at store as well.

Agree hob is needed. You can customize the media camber.

Any type of light as long as it pleasing to your eye.

Dry rock to save money. I would seed with a piece or two of lr.

I highly recommend patience and research. I jumped in head first and lost lots of money and livestock in the process. Yes you can keep is simple and cheap but please set aside some time to understand a little about water chemistry so you can proactively avoid common issues new tanks suffer. I learned about quarantining livestock the hard way. I've yet to find a 100% pest free local and/or online pet store. There are parasites i.e. ich and others that will completely whip you out so I'd say take the time up front researching proper QT husbandry. Also, research the various treatment productions and options. Also, note the size of your tank will eliminate about 90% of the fish you'll see and want lol! Liveaquaria.com has good info on fish profiles, ease of care and etc. Again, research and don't bit the bait of impulse buying!

There is no absolute have to do this to set up a tank. That being said everyone gave great advise. If it was me and my first tank I would wait until petco has a 1$ a gallon sale and pick up tank for 20$ for a 20 long. Then a good hob rated for that tank. A peice of rock or two would go a long way to help on filtration. Then a basic fish tank light and done. Marineland also makes a kit that is pretty much ready to go for less than 2o0.
