Hi guys!!

Need some help! I’m upgrading to a Red Sea reefer 170. It brings the following :

  • An adjustable height skimmer chamber, enabling you to set the water level for optimal skimmer performance.
  • A “Refugium Ready” sump with two pre-set positions allows you to decide how much of the sump you want for your skimmer and other reactors and how much as a dedicated refugium chamber.
  • Micron filter bags and filter media cups
  • RO liter reservoir that can be slid aside when necessary for pump maintenance

  • So my question is … would I need anything else in the sump? I’ve always had AIO tanks but this one has a bit more. I’m not too familiar with this :( any tips or help would be great!! Also… I’m only looking to keep this setup as simple as possible. Let me know what you think ! Thank you!!

I would just use one filter sock and use the cup on the other side for media like chemipure blue. Put rock ruble in your refugium chamber and months later add chaeto and a light. I have the XL300 so similar sump.

Thank you!! Could you post a pic of your sump??

Also, I’m thinking about getting either a skimmer or a reactor. Which would be better for me? I don’t have corals but I plan to get at least 2 or 3. And i only have 4 fish

Skimmers are very beneficial for both nutrient export and gas exchange

try an over sized skimmer bigger better

Thank you!! I’m gonna go with the ocupotus reef skimmer

another question… I currently have the tunze 1073 pump. Is this strong enough for this tank? What’s a good return pump for about 100 bucks.

I have the Reef Octopus 110sss skimmer in my 200XL. The skimmer pump is inside the skimmer allowing for a small profile. For return pumps, try and get a DC pump so you can control the flow rate. Reef Octopus Varios 2 is good . I have the Vectra S2 myself.

Here's a picture of my sump in my Reefer 250. I added a filter sock over the drain pipe, rock rubble in the media cups, and chaeto in the refugium with an oversized skimmer (that may or may not work atm...)

That's the ATO reservoir - It's connected to a float valve by the return pump

Do I need to buy a pump for this? Or the sump comes ready to do it on its own?

I would just add my RO water in there ? And it automatically drains into the tank?

I bought the tank second-hand so I don't know if it comes with a return pump, but I assume it doesn't. And yes, you fill the ATO with RO water and if the float valve lowers it will release RO until the water level is back up where it should be

Thank you ! Just to clarify .. no pump is needed for the ATO to work? The tank does it on its own ?
