New tank, new to hobby, confused.

Mp, great buy ! A 50 is a good size to start with. As for expense? You can do a budget build that will work just as well as a high end fancy setup.

Also it looks like I can remove the wooden board and just have the frame (then no need for drilling), but since this is a rimless tank, it's best to drill holes for the bulkheads/plumbing and place a thin mat of cushion in (2mm).

I would leave the board and drill oversize holes for the bulkheads. The board helps with stability.

You need to know that the tank full of water, rock and the weight of the tank may be a little over 500 pounds after set up. I am not sure a $29 dollar pre-made stand will be stable enough to hold that kind of weight. You won't know until you get the stand and see how stable it is.

How thick is the glass on that tank? Usually rimless tanks that size with less than ½" glass will have extra bracing along the top inner edge to keep the tank from bowing. If it is ½" glass, you should probably be ok. In the picture, that kind of looks like 1/4" glass though. It may be thicker, I just can't tell from the photo. I am wondering if that is a tank that someone built. I would take it outside and fill it up with water and put a straight edge on the glass to see if there is any bowing. It should hold water up to the bottom of the weir on the top of the overflow.

It is 1/4" glass, just measured it. I think the closest thing I found to it was the Marineland 60 Gallon Cube CornerFlo Rimless 24 x 24 x 24

Welcome and good luck with your build. Stay away from "Dory. " Dory is a Hippo Tang. They get big and they would need a 120g+ minimum. They are also the biggest ich magnet in the hobby, because of their low slime coat.
