Going to be buying a new tank tomorrow, and figured I’d get some opinions before I end up regretting it. Tank is going to be a 36x18 footprint, and I can get either a predrilled tank with a corner overflow, or the same tank and drill it for one of the low profile overflows on the market.... either way the final price is about the same.... advantages and dislikes of one over the other?

My tank is just the basic reef ready 125 with the dual corner overflows, and if I was going to do it over I'd definitely go with one of the overflow boxes that you drill and add to the back of the tank. The two corner overflows take up more area in the tank than I like.
I also hate that with my corner overflows I can't put my gyre pumps horizontal on the side glass of the aquarium because they don't fit between the overflow and the front glass.

low profile in the side wall if:
1. you can get one that fits the 18" side wall.
2. you aren't viewing from the side
3. you don't have to worry about someone banging in to it.

gives you easier access to the plumbing.
gives you max surface movement with the return on the opposite side.
