That's the problem. His tank is cycled. Just to much of a bioload. The mass of the amount of good bacteria in the tank is not big enough judging from the amount of LR. The tank is so young. That he does not have any anaerobic bacteria to turn the nitrates into a gas form to bubble the NO² out of the tank through gas exchange with surface tension.

Any ammonia in the water is going to be toxic.

Prime will bind the ammonia for ~48 hours, IIRC, which may give your bacteria time to get to work on it. If it was myself, I would probably do a water change, then dose the tank with Prime. (No sense dosing before the water change, only to pull the prime from the tank . . . )

How often should i dose prime?. My clown trigger passed today very sad it was my favorite fish.. im so upset the store sold me this fish telling me he would make it through a cycle.

I would go to the store and demand a refund. They gave you misinformation on purpose. No fish should be added to a cycle other than an damsel or something. Even then, there is a high likelihood the fish will not make it.

It's both. His tank was not cycled and his bioload is much too high. The people at his LFS even said that the clown trigger could survive the tank cycling and be fine. It's misinformation all around.

Sorry to read of your loss . . .

Thing is, Prime is a band-aid. A temporary fix. It sounds as though the bacteria population in your tank may be overwhelmed by the waste produced by the fish population. You can probably re-dose Prime as ammonia shows up, (use your test kits!) but how long do you want to keep doing that, knowing it's only a matter of time before the ammonia gets out of hand?

You need more bacteria, and that's going to take some time - and maybe a bit more rock. You also need an _appropriate_ bioload for the tank; one or two damsels, at most for now, with new fish being added gradually. Might not be a bad idea to return the others to the LFS that sold them to you, along with some choice comments on the ethics of multiple fish that can grow to four feet long in a tank the size of yours.

My bad. Didn't look at nitrites. Yeah jeez he was dead smack in the middle of it all cycling. Either way if any of your fish live. They are now injured in their gills if they survive. I would bring them back to the LFS and say,"I want a full refund and I also have a good lawyer if you want meet him. Your choice on which one you want."

Thank you all for your replies.. It seems he was more concerned in selling me the single clown fish to put $80 in his pocket not to mention another $70 on the golden jacks which 1 of them is no longer swimming how he normally does he is at the bottom of the tank alive but not very active. It seems they will also not hold my fish either. I dont know what i can do to save the fish at the very least. My ammonia is not high i actually tested again and seems 0ppm it reduced somehow not sure but nitrates are high

Not to mention also telling me my tank will never cycle without fish

i thought these LFS care about the fish but looks like they sell them to die and dont care. The trigger was me my sons and wife's favorite it was also very young. to see him go was heartbreaking for my son

Really sorry of your loss. This is a very rewarding hobby, with a large learning curve. Unfortunately a lot of LFS take advantage of new people to the hobby. Just do your home work and ask a lot of questions, avoid the impulse buy, and you will have a great reef tank. I wish you the best of luck.

One of my jacks is now dying.. if i took him out and put him in a bucket with satlwater mix and distelled water would i be able to save him?

Try it. Once a fish is on the downhill. Sorry to say, but the chances of survival is very low. Bring it back to the store.

If you can for your remaining fish I would suggest getting a cheap 10g and put them all in it. Get an ammonia alert badge and prime, do a 50% or more water change every 2-3 days until your tank can finish cycling. Once your fish are out get a couple raw shrimp from your grocery store and throw them in to keep the cycle going. Microbacter is a decent bacteria additive to cycle a tank I’ve used it in the past.

I have been putting prime for 2 days now, i havent done a water change because im not sure if that will prolong the cycle longer

It will prolong the cycle. I was talking about prime in your holding tank. You’ll also want a heater and air stone in it as well.

My own experience i cycled my 36 gallon bow front with 1 clown in 2 weeks then added a 2nd clown around the one month mark. Dr. Tims one an only helped a ton. No raw shrimp an stinky tanks or waiting hoping your doing it right. That bacteria takes a long time to grow. This will jump start that process an you'll be on your way to corals like gsp which is very hardy cheap coral i put in my tank month 2 an he is doubled in size since.

Tank update, so its been a week, today would be the 8th date. These are my test results look like everything leveled out does this mean my tank has completed the cycle? as you see on my previous test everything was very high.. I do have alot of diatom still in the tank. Please help thanks

Looks like it has cycled. Were you dosing prime or water changes? Reason I ask is your nitrates seem a little low for a newly cycled tank. I would leave the water as is, don’t dose anything and don’t do a water change for a couple weeks to let the tank try and stabilize, and check ammonia and nitrates every couple days to be on the safe side. If your parameters stay the way they are you’ll be good to go.
