So I recently got a new 42 gallon Red Sea tank. I put around 6 gallons from my previous established tank into this one. I also put some live rock into it. am I still going to have to cycle it?

There will still be a cycle or maturing of the new rock. However your system can handle the amount if ammonia that the live rock could handle before.

You can always test the digestion rate of the tank if no livestock is present. Dose 2ppm of ammonium chloride and see if your tank can process that in 24 hours. If it can, I’d call it cycled. Could always dose half of that also. Will take a good while for that new rock to mature. Assuming you’re mixing the old live rock with new dry rock. The water isn’t really going to help much as far as bacteria go. Not much living in the water column. The live rock on the other hand will. Not sure how much Live rock you put in there, but if the transfer was done right you’ll have little to no die off.
