New tank quotes?!

question to the reefing community........

What is an acceptable time for a builder to generate a quote upon request?

If you know the size and glass thickness and type glass you want, I would expect to get a base guestimate quote before options are added within a couple of days

How long does a tank quote usually take?! Looking to have a 96x30x30 tank built, and been waiting a week for a quote from miracles. Any other builders out there along the same quality as them?

Reef savvy and TankMeUSA is outta the question, since I know there going to be crazy expensive compared to others.

I just received my second tank from Miracle. My first tank with them was 5 years ago. I usually just call them and talk over the phone. The quote is then sent through email within 24hrs. What was said to be 8-10weeks(in February) turned out to be 19 weeks to show up at driveway. With the current situation, I understand the delay but I wasn't that huge of a rush to get it either.
My sump from Advanced Acrylic, which was ordered the same as the tank, is still on the freight liner. This was said to be 4-6weeks back in February.

Reef Savvy wouldn't even answer my phone calls or voicemails or their site's request for quote form. Not someone I want to deal with if they don't think I'm worth their time. I heard great things about them and really want to get a tank from them. But it's ridiculous that you've called and left two voicemails + the internet request for quote and no response. I thought the tank I'm getting is pretty substantail. 350g +.

In the end, a tank is a tank as long as it holds water and it's really what you put in there that counts. Nobody is going to see the little imperfections and point that out when they see a tank full of beautiful corals and fish.

From Miracle. 84”x34”x28”. Hope to get it on this weekend. The one peice Euro does sexy it up a notch. If the builder can do it, go for it!

I don’t mind waiting a few months for the tank, but would like to get the ball rolling sooner then later lol longer it takes to get a quote, the longer it takes to get the tank

Call them. They usually answer the phone. If you have talked to them before, ask for the update on the quote.
What size you're getting? I think I will have an idea of the price.
Okay, right of the bat, I can tell you the 96" require you to pick up at a freight depot. Are you okay with this? The reason why my tank is 84" is because I don't want to deal with picking up the tank. 84" is the largest he can make so that it clears the liftgate of the delivery truck.
Tank and stand or just tank?

Would be just the tank, I’d be ok with any tank in between 72 and 96.
So the tank ideally would be 30 wide, 30 tall, then 72-96 long. I am leaning towards 72 long just for the simple fact it’s easier to move

You're getting just the stand? :D
84" is their standard glass sheet. 96" is oversize and get a premium plus the delivery issue.
The huge price increase is the one piece Euro. Seems like I paid for the whole sheet of glass and only getting 4" perimeter of it. Lol

My bad, I meant the tank , it’s been a long day so far

@this is me thats a gorgeous tank. I love that!

You did pay for a whole piece of glass.
It was a full sheet they laser cut that one piece euro from.
That is the best looking tank I've seen empty. That one piece along with the cutout for your overflow separates them from the rest.
Is that 3/4 inch glass?

Thanks guys. But like I said before, regardless of how beautiful the tank is, it's the final result with water, corals, and fish that matters.
The tank is 3/4" starfire including the 1/2" eurobrace. I also paid a premium to have the bottom tempered since I'll never do a close loop and I think the trend is not as popular anymore. I prefer the extra added strength for shipping and moving purposes.

Definitely paid for the whole sheet of glass, I know I did on mine lol.

They use a water jet to cut the glass, it is actually an insanely time consuming process, my one piece euro for my 60" × 30" took 10+ hours on the machine to do it.

No more than the next day and im getting impatient. However, if you reply immediately that you will take x amount of days to respond with it, then id be happy. But if i send a question, id expect some form of response very quickly to know ive been heard.

I wonder how many quotes requests these companies get compared to actual sales. I imagine there's plenty of people browsing fish forums who suddenly go - I wonder what it would take to get a dream tank in this spot? Or see a cool one somewhere and look online for a builder and get a quote. When you run out of hours in the day, you have to prioritize, and if you think that request that came in with misspellings at 230am is not serious, you might not be in a hurry to answer.
On the flip side, you'd think there are some standard sizes and options that could be used for at least a quick estimate.
I know my own inbox has one or 2 unanswered emails.

I think as a business, you have to take every request as a potential customer. I mean, how many quotes can you have in a day on fish tanks to not bother with getting back to people. I also think that these builders should have a calculator that calculate all this out fairy quickly. But what do I know lol. I'm just an impatient reefer.
When I was planning on the tank, I made this calculator in excel in about 30mins. All they need to do is add cost of their glass and man hour and you can have a tank quote on any size fairy quickly.

Personally, I've asked for a few rather detailed quotes on builds from multiple builders and for me, Two weeks. Two weeks should be more than enough time to set aside an hour to figure out my quote. Every builder I've ever asked for a quote from has responded within two weeks except for one and I'm sure we all know who that was. For me I enjoy the planning and building phase almost as much as filling the tank full of life so I don’t mind a little extra time in this stage. Heck my sump took about 4 months to plan out and hammer out the details before any acrylic was even cut. But anything more than 2 weeks and I'm looking elsewhere.

Some people have cash In hand, like me, some people just tire kick. But can you really tell from an email? And the time doesn’t matter when you receive that email, way to many time zones across North America, that it could only be 8pm in one place and midnight in another.

Custom aquariums comes to mind haha. They have a nice calculator.

A week ? :laughs:

Nothing good comes quick in this hobby.
I call for a quote on anything else, you at minimum get a reply in a week. Even just an acknowledgement that they’ve received your email.

Nothing happens fast, I’m not expecting the tank in a week, or a full quote in a week. But an acknowledgment would be helpful to know Im not wasting my time holding out on a quote from a potential builder. All it takes is a simple email to let the customer know there extremely busy and they’ve received the request
