Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I'm not new to reefing, just new to this site. I stopped reefing for about 5 years but now getting back into it, and I'm on well water in a brand new house with PEX piping and DI and UV system attached to the house. What should I look out for when adding water, or does a RO/DI system make sense for my setup?

Thanks in advance. I'll have the Build thread up soon as I pick up the waterbox 110.4 tomorrow.

If your system gives you 0 TDS then your fine to use your water as is. If not then get a RO/DI system. If your TDS is super low but not 0 then your RO/DI filters will last a long time. I'm on well water and my TDS out of the tap is around 45-65 and my filters last well over a year.

Yes you need an RODI unit and make sure to get a TDS meter. I’d be cautious of using well water and I’d get a 5 or more stage RODI if it’s measuring a lot of TDS but it may wear down the filters faster. I personally would NEVER use my well water for my tank.

Do not use well water . Must have ro/di or you will get problems.......

If you already have a RO system for drinking water, you can add on canisters for the DI. You don't want to drink deionized water, so use a valve to switch ro the di when making up water.

As I have been Reefing for > 50yrs and on well water systems for 45 yrs, I can speak with some experience on this topic. My present well at 1000’ has a TDS of 950ppm. It saves on salt mix and goes straight into tank. Get your well water tested. I use a regional agriculture lab: Ward Lab.

This tank has been set up for 25 years.

What

In the new reefing world, ‘TDS’ is evil. Everybody insists on 0 TDS. Meanwhile, probably more than 95% of the solids they’re filtering out are carbonates, calcium, or inert materials, and whatever things they might not want are in such a small concentration as to not be problematic…not to mention many of those molecules/ions will bind to other materials and be taken out of circulation.

In chemistry, concentration matters.

Of course, there are bad water supplies out there. The point is, we could…and should…actually see what is in our source water. A lot of reefers don’t actually need RO/DI. Hell, I’ve got a reef system in my classroom that I use Chicago tap water in. It’s healthy. Corals and inverts are healthy, fish are healthy, etc. And I commit the cardinal sin of not even dechlorinating the water.

I don’t protein skim nor do I change water, aside from gravel vacuume, nor do I use granulated activated carbon. To remove DOC, I use cryptic sponges. For nutrient export, I frag & sell coral. Normal operation is nutrient recycling using multiple nutrient pathways to move carbon up the food chain using the microbial loop.

What does this mean? Your well is salt water?
