I've been keeping a moderately successful 65 gallon (total including sump) drop-off tank for about a year now. Houses a few fish, a coral, some crabs and an urchin.

I'd both like to upgrade in size as well as move away from the challenges the drop-off presents (uneven lighting, more difficult to deal with flow than a rectangular tank). I'd also be pleased to be done with the peninsula style tank and regain a bit of space.

I love the red sea max 500's footprint. There's one in my local fish store and the extra depth it has over the reefer series is something I absolutely want. I can't however justify the 6k (plus tax, plus shipping) price tag when I don't really want most of the equipment that comes with it. Toss in that used reefer models are ridiculously cheap around me and it becomes even more difficult to justify.

Are there models in other brands out there with a very similar footprint to the max 500 or even 400? Something that has a 27" or so depth in a 110-140 gallon range?
