New Tank time

So I’ve had a small 40g up and going for some time, and am in love with this hobby. I’m deciding to use my year end bonus on setting up my “dream tank”

I have already spent a LOT of time reading/searching on here and google, but figured with so many awesome people on here that know so much I’d be an idiot to not tap this forum for ideas / info.

My initial search was for a post that had an “ideal” set up list equipment, dosers, apex etc. which I havent found. I could probably name all the needed complements but want to make sure I’m not missing something.

The other is just initial suggestions on tank. I’ve been looking hard at the waterbox 170-180 that come with that AI Prime lights, but absolutely want to make sure I get the right start.

My total budget is around 18-20 thousand. All in including livestock, and plumbing.


Any advice, lists, etc are 100% appreciated.

"Ideal" tanks and equipment lists are like belly buttons or opinions, everybody has one and they are all different.

I like simple systems and I like crazy fluorescing colors, so I built my own 90g tank (36"x30"x20"), built my own sump and used reenforced kitchen cabinets as a stand. It will also have a very unusual rockscape. My 90g build thread is listed in my signature below.

This is my old 40g tank. And as good as it looks here, it's 10 times better at night with only strong blue leds!

Wow. I can’t believe you got so much out of that 40G. It’s beautiful!!
