New tank, Triton or not

I am not totally new to the hobby. I had a 55 gallon about 9 years ago. I am in a new home, and bought a 120 gallon(4*2*2). I am.building a DIY 55 gallon sump and stand. I thought I was all ready to start the stand when I came across the Triton method. It looks interesting, I've read alot of.posts on it. Do you think it's something I should try on a new tank? I am more then willing to go slow and take as long as I need to get this right, any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

I ran it on the same size tank that was started with dry Pukani and was also bare bottom. Was by far the worst start to a reef that I have had. I pulled it after two months and started water changes and went back to regular two part. After that everything improved dramatically.

My guess was that the new setup was trying to find its equilibrium and no water changes made that worse. So, based solely off my experience alone, I would say do water changes during the first year of the tanks life.

I’m not knocking Triton at all, as there are amazing tanks running the system. Just saying, I don’t think it’s per say the best for the reef during the first year that everything is finding its balance. Good luck with the new tank.

I've had reef tanks in the past but took a break for 6 years. Back then I had Calcium reactors and did weekly water changes, I had some amazing SPS dominant mixed reefs but something always seemed to get knocked out of wack and I would start losing corals. On my new setup (66G cube tank), I wanted to go lower maintenance, quiet, and low power consumption, when I read about the Triton method I was immediately interested. I really love the natural approach to it and the ICP testing really helps clear up the hidden things that can cause crashes or lose. So far on my new setup its been 3 month, I just started a very small dosing of Triton Core 7 supplements so I don't have a lot of history to show success but so far am happy with the way things are going. If you look at a successful reef that are always having to dose or run a CA reactor along with a lot of water changes. I really did not want to have water stored for changes, that is heated etc.. and takes up a lot of room that I don't have, when you calculate out the cost of Triton vs. CA reactor along with water changes the prices are not that much different especially if you continue doing ICP tests and adjustment.
