start adding CUC slowly and be patient, they’ll phase out eventually

You do realize that you will be experiencing a variety of ugly phases throughout the first year right and they get progressively worse before getting better. Which you have there is simple diatoms which will go away in a few weeks or a month.

But if you are patient, there will eventually be that day. The day when you are looking at your tank and and you realize that you aren't battling the uglies.

Don't let propaganda sway you. The ugly phase is normal and not something that you should attempt to eradicate. Management is the best solution.

Agreeing with the other replies. Diatoms seem very well behaved compared to other potential pioneering photosynthetic microbes like cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates.
