Hi everyone, new member here. About 15 years ago i started with a 5 gallon nano tank and eventually moved up to a 45 tall with a sump wet dry and skimmer and kept a mainly fowlr tank that did have an abundance of mushroom corals and a huge bubble tip anenome for about 5 years. Ran 2 96w pc actinic and 10k. Was a fun tank. Fast forward....

I got the bug again after a very boring stint in freshwater with a fluval spec. I have dreams of a 100 gallon plus tank and sump one day but due to space and housing I ended up with a very hard to find old stock aqueon 38 gallon and decided to go the way of HOB. I am running the tidal 110 hob, aquamaxx 1.5 hob skimmer, 2 jeabo 25w wave pumps and controller, hyggar 200w titanium heater w controller and two kessil a160we tuna blues with the base controller. I just ordered a aquamaxx fr-se hob reactor with a sicce 250 pump I plan on making into a chaeto reactor with strip leds. Have the jeabo dp4 doser im slightly nervous about using... I guess number one, set up sound ok?? Goal is some low to medium light corals, softies, bubbles, a bubbletip anenome and a couple of false clownfish with the standard cleaning crew and a fire shrimp.

Side note... Can you hang too much stuff on the back? Im worried about stress on the tank and feel like when i add the reactor I should move the lights to the sides..

To the main dish...
I started the tank with 30 lbs of natures ocean bioactive live sand which surprisingly did arrive wet. Ordered 25 lbs of live rock from a store in pa which arrived poorly wrapped and barely damp, if not even surface dry. It did not stink, just had a salty musty smell to it. I then added another 10lbs or so I got a steal on from my local Petco. Ive only had the tank running since last Thursday evening, so a total of 5 days but the water went from cloudy to crystal clear and I checked water parameters today and ammonia was at zero or barely percievable, nitrite zero and nitrate was at 4ppm. 1.022 salinity at 75 degrees. I checked my ro salt mix and its 0 nitrates. Is it possible this thing has already cycled? Or just hasn't even started yet... Im used to the old school "dont add livestock for 3-4 weeks" rule of thumb. Id love to get some chaeto for my reactor as well as some pods and a clean up crew to get started. Should I do a water change and have at it? Thoughts? Thanks in advance, got a wealth of knowledge from surfing as a non member

Lights basically in night mode getting ready to shut down...

Ammonia isn’t going to show up out of nowhere. You’d need something to introduce the ammonia; fish food, dead shrimp, ammonium chloride etc

I’d say you’re not done cycling. If you’resuper in a hurry (I recommend patience) some bacteria in a bottle will help you get kick started.

It’s cycled and moving to your home doesn’t uncycle, even the shipped stuff. See this example set below. Aquarium conventions set up rows of insta reefs.

the thread is a study on skip cycling, and cycling all aquariums never using test kits

I forgot to mention I did add a bottle of instant ocean biospira. No hurry here, want to do it right. Was Assuming live rock die off would kick it over.

Ah. Well technically you’re done when your bacteria population can turn 2ppm ammonia to 0 in 24 hours. So if you really wanna make sure dose some ammonia source and test in a day to see where your ammonia lands; you could be ready & testing can confirm that.

Very good read, thanks!

Im setting up a 50 cube ... it was a cichlid tank... I’m going to attempt a sumpless set up too.
lights ( not hung yet) - mars aqua 300
Filter- canister - fluval 405 ( with only ceramic media and 2 nanotech blocks - no filter floss. Was in the freshwater setup for 10 years
Rocks / sand - CaribSea live sand , and life rock
Circulation - MP40
Refugium via aqua max HOB reactor
