it is not 20g more for the fox face...it's 100+

I am not an expert, but I think what many are alluding to is that with increased volume one typically gains length. So for the 100+ fish, often it's the difference between a 4' and a 6' tank that is the key. That's something they notice lol. But if you are willing to compromise on your stocking, 80 is a big step up from your 40, and opens you up to lots of options... just not ALL the options.

ok, 100 gallon was the original plan anyways, but still an extra 1 inch of swimming space for a baby 2 inch tang, i don’t think it’ll be depressed lol IM 100 gal ext overflow tank is 47 inches long, this 80 gallon is 46.

I have a 70g rimless planted aquarium I use as a frag tank and then I have a 180g planet aquarium display. They are phenomenal tanks for the price. I think external bean animal is the way to go. Internal overflow takes up so much display room for almost always 2 pipe solution.

I was saying that based on the 3 fish you really want, you'd be better off with a 6' tank. But if you are willing to compromise on what you are putting in, or if you are going to use it as a grow out tank, a 48ish tank definitely gives you more options than your 40g. The grow out becomes a slippery slope though, especially for something like a hippo. How big is too big for an 80, and are you going to rehome to somewhere good at that point, or keep it juuuust a little longer, which is open ended.

I definitely wouldn’t get a Red Sea since they all are popping seams and they dealt with it terrible. Maybe new ones are better but also seen an upgraded one pop a seam

My ext 170 59×30×21.7 is only 135 inside dims.

If you got young or small fish to start with the chances of compatibility and overall success increase greatly. Fox face is fine in 70g min according to live aquaria, they are industry standard for size recommendations.

Plenty of people here also have said they do fine in a 75g and this tank is 2” taller and 2” wider

looks like you're a tang guy I feel the 80 would be to small for what you want long term but if you want a few small wrasses and other fish 4" or smaller it would be good.

if you like tangs just get the IM 200 its a great tank! the peninsula is even better

if one is going to upgrade do it right the 1st time.

now all that said there is a sweet spot in tank size ,price and what fits your budget and home.

the IM 112 looks like its a sweet tank too.

or you could just go all out crazy and build a DIY plywood aquarium and have all the tangs...haha

the depth of these tanks are nice. might not be able to have all the big tangs but they can swim in and out of the rock work as well and back n forth.

the IM sumps are nice but you can DIY one with a 60br and it will work just as good.

if your handy and like to build a stand this is an option form SCA not a bad price .
