Hi everyone I am new to the reef hobby and right now I am setting up my 20 gallon aquarium and as I test my water parameters my ammonia is high (0.25-0.50). I am using an API kit and it is not outdated so if anyone has any ideas on lowering the ammonia, that would be great, already used ammonia lock.

How new is the tank, it sounds as though it is probably cycling (in which case your ammonia is normal)... do a search for cycling a new tank and see if it is helpful.

Your tank is going through a normal cycle, that could take up to 8 weeks. Not to worry, its all normal.

Welcome to R2R! Some more details about your tank may help such as any livestock, filtration, other parameters. A water change would be a good start in my opinion.
