Hi all, So I'm setting up a new tank, using RO water with a TDS of 0 and reef crystals as my salt choice. So I went and set up the brand new tank last night and filled it with water and then I mixed the salt right in the tank since its the first time setting it up. After letting it sit for a few hours I tested my parameters and I noticed I had nitrites? I have no idea where these are coming from, could it be the salt causing this? I also did some searching on the topic and couldn't find a solid answer so hopefully someone could help me out here, Thanks!

What test kit you used?

Nitrites of the back means you had ammonia before you even filled it.
What kind of sand and rock you have.

Its showing nitrites before anything was added, currently bare bottom with 2 brand new filters running on it, and i have strips and api liquid test kit as well

Weird.
Maybe a testing error.
Hm, Well Both tests are showing the same level of nitrites, so you don't think it could be an issue with the salt? I mean the nitrites are going to disappear once its cycled anyways so its not that big of a deal at the moment because its fish less but I was more so just curious about why their showing up

Order of the three cycle nasties are ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.
Not sure why you get this.
If salt is bad you will read elevated nitrates and phosphate.

@Randy Holmes-Farley might have a sneer for you.

Yeah I know how a cycle works this is just a weird situation. Oh well I'll just keep moving on with my tank then

This "is" bizzare ! So new tank , no sand or rock . New filter with brand new sponge or such in said filter. So not contamination there. Gotta be a test error. It was only a couple hours before You tested. Have You tested again after more time? I can't imagine how new artificial salt. Again gotta be the test was botched in some way.
May I suggest you just keep this in mind & continue with your plans. Sorry can't give you a definitive answer.

Oh Ya, welcome to R2R !

Yeah its weird because i'm testing my tanks that have been running for a 1+ years and they are showing nitrites of 0 on the same test. Oh well I guess we'll never know lol , and thanks for the welcome! I only really have fish only experience and have never really messed with corals before so I figured I'd finally join r2r to pick up some knowledge lol since this tank will be my first reef
