Set up a new tank and it's currently cycling. I've never added a bacteria product before but this time added Biospira to it. The ammonia was at 1.0 with nitrite at 0.5 and nitrates at about 30 ppm before u added it. The day after adding everything is close to 0. Is this correct? I expected to see high nitrates if ammonia and nitrite were already concerted...

Any input? I did dump the entire 75g container into a 20g tank but idk. Something seems weird.

There's two different strains of bacteria at work here. One consumes the ammonia producing nitrite, the other consumes the nitrite produces nitrate. There's another that consumes nitrate, but is limited.

What test kit did you use? Nitrate should be high, how long have the tank been cycling?

Was using API for all 3. Before biospira i had ammonia nitrite and nitrates. I started it with dosing ammonia and Dr Tims. I dosed too much ammonia so I did a water change and when ammonia still wasn't dropping at all from 1 ppm I added biospira. The next day all 3 were at 0 or close to 0 according to api.

It may be that values are low now, but the nitrate was not likely ever 30 ppm. The nitrite was potentially interfering with the nitrate kit, and 0.5 ppm nitrate can read as high as 50 ppm nitrate.
