New tank

Just got done setting up a new to me 65 reef, everything came from a 40gal off Craigslist. New max spect light arrives today. Anyway added a new fugitive inter the stand, previous owner had canister filter. Lots of people have told me not to put a sand bed in the fugi anymore just some cheto ( anyone want to prune and donate from Jax ) and just rock ruble in fugi. My last tank had mangroves and deep sand bed, so which should I do?
