Hello! I'm new here & honestly in the past I have not had a good reputation with keeping fish alive but after working at a pet store for 3 yrs, I'm a little better & fell in love with an American Flag betta fish we got in. (yes I have also managed to kill bettas in the past).
He's still going strong but only in a 2.5 gallon tank, I'm trying to upgrade him to a 10 gallon at least. Ideally, I LOVE the carpeted grass look with various other plants. Still preferably fairly low maintenance on the tank.
Here's my dilemma...
I bought a 10 gallon Aqueon rimless tank for about $50. No soil or anything else yet.
After I bought it, someone gave me a link to a 10 gallon rimless Dennerle starter kit for $180, it comes with the dennerle soil, filter, light, & all kinds of other things, it sounds like a really good deal.
I think the Dennerle tank is absolutely beautiful, but I just can't figure out if all the other items in it are worth it or even necessary? From what I can tell, the soil is good, but I still am not finding a whole lot on the rest of it.
I was going to price out what it would cost to get my own items together along with the Dennerle tank just by itself. Wondering if it wouldn't be too much more expensive than the starter kit they provide you.
I'm trying to decide if I should go with the more expensive but better looking tank or save money & build my own with the 10 gallon I already bought?
If I do my own, I'm looking into these soils:
Amazonia (I'm hearing amazing stuff about this one...is that true? & is it good for bettas?)
Seachem Flourite
Fluval Stratum
Eco Complete
& of course, Dennerle Scaper's soil
I don't want to do anything too complicated because again, I don't have a good track record with fish so I'm pretty nervous haha. I'm very happy that he's still alive & well
This is him when he arrived at my store
He had fin rot initially but a friend helped me treat him for him.
