ok im looking into geting a few pieces of coral. im new to it so what would be easy to keep and pretty cheap. whats the difference between hard and soft corals and sps. any opinions?

Everyone always told me to start with mushrooms and zoas. Honestly at first I couldn't keep either. I hit my stride when I tried softies. Hammers torches and frog spawns are really easy and give nice movement to the tank. Know your fish before dumping a lot of money into corals. My wife decided she wanted a Red Sea sail fin and he can be kind of a jerk to the corals if we don't over feed him

Basically, soft corals with no skeleton are softies.
Soft corals with skeletons are lps (large polyp stoney)
And hard corals are sps (small polyp stoney)
They generally go in that same order as far as price, and difficulty.

Green Star Polyps and Xenia are good beginner corals. When they don't open up, could be an indicator of poor water quality. These corals will spread fast and can become a nuisance.

It's also important to know that your equipment will decide what you can keep as well. You can't just go from soft coral to hard corals under the same conditions "generally" as the each require different environments.

Get your money ready!!! It's an addiction!!! I agree with Thomas j.. Those torches, hammers, and frogspawn are pretty easy to keep, and are good pieces to introduce at first.. I'd also add some nice looking zoas to the mix to get you started..

alright that helps alot lol narrows it down pretty good lol. now has anyone bought corals off of aquariumdepot.com there prices seem really low and the pictures of the corals look really good lol. think they are worth a try?
