So I've always been fascinated by fish in general and gone through phases through my whole life. I was obsessed with a freshwater aquarium that my parents had for me when I was little and I'm sure that is where it all began. Although it was freshwater my whole life my eyes were always drawn toward the colors and look of saltwater. A few weeks ago my daughters 2 year old beta died, I know a beta, and I want to fulfill my dream of having a saltwater tank and offer her the same enjoyment my parents did for me. For the past few weeks I've researched and read everything I possibly could about saltwater aquariums and am lucky enough to have a good friend who has worked with aquariums directly as a profession. Although it will be a long process due to expenses I'm looking forward to taking on this hobby as it has become a healthy obsession. And it forces the patients issue that I've read has caused failure to millions of systems. I look forward to learning from the friendly people here and providing an amazing tank in time for my children and myself to enjoy!

The only item that I have so far is a 75gallon glass tank. The rest will come over the next several months. I would prefer a reef tank but will see how things go.

Welcome to R2R and the addiction!!! Good luck with your tank!!

Expenses causing you to go slow is probably a good thing in this hobby as nothing good comes from rushing. I would recommend doing a sump. Petco does a $1 a gallon sale from time to time, so you can get one fairly cheap. If the tanks isnt tempered glass I would recommend drilling it because external overflows are often loud and unreliable. A heater, good skimmer, some powerheads, a light, some rock-dry rock is much cheaper than live rock, and you can be on your way to setting up your system. Also a ro/di unit is worth it weight in gold. Check craigslist, there are always people leaving the hobby for various reasons and selling stuff cheap. Good luck.
