I'm setting up my first reef tank (75 gallon). Im looking for equipment. I have a Fluval FX5 Canister filter that I'm going to use, any suggestions on filter media set-up would help. Looking for a 48" Strip light preferably LED how do I know what I need? How do I know the right protein skimmer to use?any advice would be great! I'm been doing some reading and there's so much info out there it gets a little overwhelming LOL! Thought I would ask the advice of people who do it themselves.

BRS has a great series called 52 weeks of reefing on YouTube. In that series they are setting up a 160 gallon tank but much of the information is still useful for a 75. There are a ton of videos and many are over 20 minutes long but the information is incredibly easy to digest. I strongly recommend watching the whole series over a couple weeks before you buy anything else. Research and patience will pay dividends.

Welcome to the group. Canister is less than desireable. It is a nitrate factory, no fun to repack and only a means of chemical filtration, not biological.
Ideally, i would consider a HOB (hang on back filter), which it hangs on back if tank. Will have a pump for water flow, media basket or tray for carbon, etc and in some cases a skimmer and heater chamber making it an all in one with easy access for tank maintenance.
