Hi i'm looking for a cheap light to grow mushroom coral.

I have a 29 gallon tank but can't seem to grow anything with only 2 t-5's.

I came across this led and was wondering if it would grow soft corals?

technically you should be able to grow mushroom corals with the t5's you already have. I find they are slow growers for me, could be the same for you as well. The LED you have chosen may work just as well as your t5's, maybe a little better. I'm no expert on lights of course so take it for what it's worth.

Thanks for the reply, It's just been months and i feel like 2 24" coralifes are getting me no where.

I saw that a lot of the led black boxes use 3watt leds, So i figured since it's the same watt it'd be a cheaper alternative

Well it should work for softies. If it makes you feel better I have 8 48in t5's (mix of ATI and guiseman bulbs) and my mushrooms haven't multiplied at all in a year. They just dont grow well for me. My sps and zoas, however are doing quite well. :)

3 watt should work but really depends on the optics and spectrum. 2x24" t5 though should be enough to grown mushrooms quite well. If they got good color I would not worry about it but sometimes our water can be a little to clean for hardier corals.

Yes good point. My water is very clean- especially right now while fallow. That could be the OP's problem as well.

Technically you can grow anything under those LEDs, they are 3w LEDs, thats a great choice for a fixture imo. Even if there were no optics, thats a perfect unit for a 29g tank.

Taking a second look at the link I have to agree with reefing madness. No optics would give a 120 degree spread so that should be decent and with it that close to the water you should have plenty of light. Just as long as the spectrum is right so you are not plagued with alge. I really cant see why you could not do lps and even some sps with this light. Cheap to so even if it burns out in 6 months to a year you are still ahead as you would spend that or more on bulbs anyway.
