Just introducing myself. Been in the hobby a long time started with freshwater and worked my way to salt. Was back in the late 80 early 90s. I had a 70 gallon tank. I built a hood retrofitted with 2x 100watt metal halide and was using drip filtration with bio-balls.
I did a lot of reading back then and subscribed to all the magazines. Julian Sprung was doing a series were he eliminated the drip filtration and added a protein skimmer. I found a venture valve in one of the magazines and built a 4 foot high by 4 inch wide skimmer that worked. I eventually eliminated the bio-balls. I was already dosing kalkwasser and strontium and my corals started to grow.
Here on Long Island we had Ed's Aquarium among many others. No one wanted to believe that the above was a good idea. They couldn't argue with the results and I became a go to guy for advise.
I got back in the hobby about year ago. The advancements in the science and equipment are awesome and the fact a lot of the corals are now aquaculture made me feel better ecologically. The idea of a Nano Reef was fascinating and seemed like a challenge I could take on.
Tank 1: I have a mixed reed in a Fluval Evo 13.5 with skimmer (pictures to follow). I can't help myself, the light burned out and I retrofitted the hood with LED strip lights (pictures to follow).
Current project working on canister style cheato reactor or algae scrubber.
Tank 2: My clown fish had become aggressive so I got a tiny 1.7 gallon that I will eventually make an anemone tank. To maintain water temperature I made a DIY fan (pictures to follow) and a DIY skimmer modeled after the Reef Glass Skimmer (images to come). Plan to add an dosing pump to handle water evaporation.
