Hey all I just built a wall unit with a 45 fresh discus tank that I had and added a 45 gal tank that I'm going reef. I am limited on space and wanted to know if any1 successfully ran a canister filter for a reef tank. I'm hoping so cause that's pretty much my only option. Thanks

Yes it can be done, the key to it is keeping up with cleaning the canister out as detritus (poop, food, other gunk) can build up and cause issues. (I have not done it personally).

Thanks. I'm going to give it a shot. I'm hoping to find someone on here that has an established canister driven tank that could point me in the right direction. Crossing my fingers

Since its only a 45 gallon tank, IMO, you'd be better off saving yourself the extra maintenance and electricity by running the canister and just doing water changes. It really isn't as much if a benefit as you'd think and needs to be cleaned often.

I run a canister on my 60 gal and every day I look at it I wish i had a sump. I have problems with phosphates and no place to put a natural scrubber. Its also a pain to clean every 2 weeks. I also run a hob skimmer witch is unsightly. since i got into this hobby all of the really nice tanks iv seen have a sump. Im not saying u cant make a really nice tank with a canister, I just think a sump is the way to go. If u dont have a drilled tank u can use a overflow box with a sump. All in all Iv only been in the hobby for 3 years and still a nube.

i have a fluvel 406 running on my 55g reef. i clean mine about once a month along with a 15g water change. I do wish that i had a sump to hide heaters, protein skimmer etc...

I do agree that a sump is great and I do often wish that I went with the sump. The main reason is that it would hide my skimmer, heater, tubes and my pump for my HOB fuge. However, I am running my reef with a canister filter and I love the way it looks. You can add a false wall to hide the equipment.
