Today I joined R2R, but I am not brand new to reef keeping. I previously had a 75 gallon reef tank which I ran for about 5 years that contained 50 lbs of live rock, a few corals (elegance, polyps, mushrooms). However, I was primarily interested in the fish with multiple tangs, flame angel and some clowns. I learned a great deal during that time and unfortunately some lessons at the expense of the inhabitants. I had to tear down the tanks when I started graduate school and just didn't have enough time to properly maintain the tank. I sold the inhabitants and donated the tank.
Having finished the PhD degree and smooth-talking the wife for awhile, she has agreed it is time for a new reef tank. I have not purchased the setup yet, but have simply been planning and researching extensively. I had forgotten just how addictive this hobby can be - it is a fantastic mixture of science and engineering and that is what makes it so interesting to me. This time I want to invest in all the right equipment and approaches to maximize success. I intend to keep primarily corals (soft, lps, sps), with some number of fish appropriate for the size tank. My planned equipment purchase includes...
1) 65 gallon aqueon tank (still weighing used 90 gallon off Craig's list)
2) R&J cherry birch stand and canopy
3) AI Hydra 52 for 65 gallon option / undecided for 90 gallon option
4) Proflex Model 3 sump with refugium/Model 4 if 90 gallon
5) AquaC EV-180 protein skimmer
6) deep sand bad of LS
7) 2x MP10 WES power head
8) 2x Cobalt 150W heater
9) BRS RO/DI 75 GPD
10) Tunze 3155 Osmolator for ATO
11) BRS GFO reactor & BRS media reactor
12) Apex Controller Gold
13) Liter Meter 3 Auto Water Change System
Starting the purchase process next week at LFS and I am pretty darn excited. My focus is to do it right at reasonable cost, but do it slowly enough where I can afford to get the right equipment. Looking forward to learning a great deal from the forums.
