Hello everyone,
My name is Larry. I design and build electrical control systems for machinery and automate production lines for a living, for fun just about anything in the outdoors. I love to snorkel and snuba dive, my next step is to become scuba certified. So a little history, I first got into the hobby about six years ago, A friend of mine had a 50 gal. reef setup, I was amazed and kept telling my wife that I would like to get into saltwater aquariums. A few months later I was at that same friends house and saw that his tank was sitting empty in his garage with all the rock piled up beside it, so 250.00 later I had a 50 gal. tank sitting in my living room. About six months into it I ran across a deal on a 75 gal. tank with a 40 gal. sump, I transferred everything from the 50 to the 75. By this time I was driving my wife crazy, dragging her into every fish store area. About two years into my tank was full of life and looking great, but do to unfortunate circumstances I had to get out of the hobby. So now I am back. I have a JBJ Nano cube cf quad 28 gal. that I have just set up. My plans are to within the next 3 to 5 weeks replace the cf lighting with rapid LEDs, add apex jr. controller, phosban reactor, Gyre 130 and once I get ready to start adding fish a skimmer. I put live rock in it about two weeks ago, My parameters looked good except the PH was high so yesterday I added about 30 pounds of live sand hoping that will buffer the PH. So I have a question, since I used live rock and live sand shouldn't this shorten my cycle time a little? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome Larry back to the hobby. :)

Yes the use of live rock and sand will significantly shorten your cycle time as long as the LR was cured.

What was the pH value? At this point if there is no live stock in the system the only correction that might be made to parameters is specific gravity. The pH will stabilize as the tank ages and stabilizes. I had a JBJ 28 and I really loved it.

Welcome to r2r!!!
The process is help "some" with liverock however the general consensus on bagged live sand not so much, let see if we can't get you additional POV on this question [HASHTAG]#reefsquad[/HASHTAG] .

Welcome to R2R! I agree... no need to correct anything except SG at this point. Live sand and live rock should shorten your cycle some, but you will still need to add an ammonia source- fish food, a raw shrimp, raw ammonia. I've used live sand (the kind that's wet in the bag) with no issues before. When I transferred tanks I used new live rock and live sand with no cycle at all, of course I did use the live rock from the previous set up so that helps too.

Welcome back to the addiction Larry and welcome to R2R. I would agree, that assuming your live rock was live/cured, it should help to shorten your cycle. However, and although you're probably excited to be back in, I would recommend taking your time and making sure it's cycled completely before jumping in. I would also recommend the use of some type of food/raw shrimp as an ammonia source. I wouldn't be too concerned with pH this early...as said above, it should balance itself out as the tank matures.

Welcome @Larry Cox to R2R. You've gotten great advice above. With you starting a new tank, now is the time to start a Member's Tank thread. It's a great place to document your build, ask questions, and go back after a couple years to see all the improvements and changes that have occurred. Again, Welcome.

Thanks everyone, I had forgotten about putting a raw shrimp in there, I have been away too long, forgotten a lot of things so any coaching along the way would be great, thanks. I will post a picture and current parameters this evening in the members tank thread.
