Hi all, just joined the R2R group this morning. I have been 'stealing' information in google searches as I have been continuing to learn about reefs, creatures, maintenance etc. I had a reef tank back in the late 90's but moved to Canada and I didn't think it would survive a move. Just got back into it. Things have changed a lot since then!
I have a RedSea Max 400S and have been building up on the reef tank population. All is relatively good, most animals are doing ok, but having a nasty issue with red slime that isn't getting better. Thought I might as well join a group and be legal. This forum was recommended by Cherry Corals. Big shout out to them. Great company, responsive, things come on time and if not, they let me know why.

If any of you have sage advice on red slime that actually works, I would love to hear about it. So far, what I have heard is keep water parameters good (check), reduce photoperiod (check), regular water changes (check). phosphate is 0, No3 is 0, just replaced activated carbon, all other chemistry is meets recommendations. From this forum, I just read that I must vacuum it up daily and brush off any of the algae on the rocks etc - daily.

Welcome aboard. You should be happy with the amount of help you're going to receive here. Unfortunately I've not dealt with that problem so I'm unsure. But happy reefing...

Welcome to R2R, I've never dealt with it personally, but I'm sure within our userbase is someone with the answer you seek. Just wanted to welcome you to R2R and thank you for joining up :)

Welcome!!! As you have read manual removal is a big part in getting rid of red slime, however it’s not the only part. As you have said keep your parameters in check and keep up on water changes. The manual removal will knock out a big chunk of it but if you don’t take care of the root cause you will always be fighting it. Best of luck!

welcome 2r2

Welcome to R2R! In my experience, Cyanobacteria will go away on its own if you can figure out what is feeding it. For me it was additives that led to it. Selcon, for example, and an Amino supplement. Did you start any thing like that or have any change in feeding right before the time the slime showed up?
