Hello All.... I had a 55 gal freshwater showtank as a teenager-- and here I am 30+ years later taking on the saltwater tank world-- what took me so long!! I'm only 3 months into the hobby, but WOW-- it captures my thoughts, time, and attention EVERY day! So much to learn, and so intriging... I am so grateful for sites and people like this/you that help folks like me with your experience and knowledge-- thank you for sharing!

I hope to do the same at some point.... In the mean time, I plan to continue to plow time and $$ learning, building, making mistakes, and bottom line-- ENJOYING this awesome new hobby!

Respectfully,

Dan from Virginia Beach, VA

Hi Dan,

Welcome to the forum!

I think one of the biggest challenges we face in this hobby is resting the urge to rush. In general, our inspiration for a captivating reef tank comes from the other tanks we see in our travels. But these tanks do not happen over night.

Much in the way you cultivate a garden of beautiful colors and aromatic scents, a reef tank must be planned and nurtured, giving it an opportunity to mature and become the tank you imagine it as in your mind's eye.

So please be patient. Go slow. Quarantine. Add stock slowly. This hobby can get expensive without the added expense of dealing with a diseased tank, just because your couldn't resist the urge to skip quarantining.

I've been in the hobby a bit over 10 years. But I've only been on R2R for the last 2 or 3. My tanks always survived, but they never thrived until I became a member of this forum.

There are many successful reef keepers on this forum, all with their own specialty. From the physics of lighting, to water chemistry to nuisance algae to the ID and treatment of disease, you will absolutely find all that you need to have a tank that not only survives, but thrives.

Welcome to the poor house! ;)
