Hello I am new to saltwater aquariums I just purchased an E1 40 max red sea aquarium I need help with the protein skimmer I am not sure as to how to adjust the gate coming from the skimmer. Also I need help adjusting the airflow in line with that gate the tank has been set up for approximately one week. Does anyone have this type of system that can help me?

Conner,

Welcome to R2R and hope you feel like your at home.

Just would like to note somethings. I used to run the ole RSM 130 and it's has a rear sump design too.
Your a week into your setup. At this time you do not have enough organics to get a good skimmate for the skimmer, yet.
I'd keep it running to break it in and it will provide aeration for your reef but at this time you will only get frustrated if you try to tune the skimmer in at this time.

Personally, I just focus on the nitrogen cycle when I start up a new reef. I like to get a good and deep cycle. If you start skimming out organics at this time then you will only slow down and weaken the cycle process.

I'd let it run but keep it tuned back and not pull skimmate until your cycle is complete. When you are done with the cycling process then your skimmer will tune in very fast because you have built up enough organics for the skimmer to run properly after the cycle.

Here's a video and it shows him lifting the skimmer gate.

Good luck. :)

Regards, GoVols

Conner, Welcome to R2R. Looks like you are in good hands

If someone else can help guide Conner on how to tune in the E series skimmer...
Between the gate and the airline then please help him out.

I just do not like to fine tune in a skimmer until the nitrogen cycle has ran it's coarse.

Thanks, Freddie

Welcome to R2R!

I had the Max E260 for a few months before upgrading, and I think it looks like the same skimmer.

You should have a small white air valve and until the skimmer is run in it may overflow from the top of the skimmer, so you need to install the air valve in the grey tube on the side of the skimmer and close the air valve down to closed. Then gradually open the valve bit by bit and it will keep the skimmer in check until it's run in which can take a few weeks until it settles down. Basically if it's fully open you may get white water bubbles coming out the top of the skimmer like crazy!

You also adjust the 'gate' up and down which 'from memory' adjusts the water level to set for wet or dry skimming. I think from memory if you lower the gate it will allow for the water to flow through faster, or it might be the other way around but just have a play with it, you'll know straight away.

Just remember, as it's a new tank until you get 'stuff' in the water, if there is nothing to skim out you may not get much skim mate so try and avoid keeping turning it up to get skimmate otherwise you will enter a circle of overskimming and then underskimming, overskimming........

I found by making SMALL adjustments to the air valve and the gate, over a period of weeks/months you will get the feel of it so just be patient.

Your aiming to have the air valve fully open eventually and then you just remove it

All skimmers have a run in period so for a few weeks don't try and fine tune to much as things change over this run in period or you'll drive yourself mad!
