Hello, just started a salt tank two weeks ago. I care from cichlids and have had that tank for about 10 years. I have a 65 gallon cycling now and have already installed cleaning crew. Probably a couple more weeks before I can add fish. From Houston, TX....just wanted to say hello.

In sump skimmer needed...

Skimmers are always a great way to export nutrients. Are they a must, no. So many ways to run a successful reef, lots of good articles here to help

And welcome

Welcome to R2R!!! Some people start with a skimmer, some wait, and others don't use them at all. IMO, I would recommend one now or within a few months. I have a Reef Octopus but there are several good options. Good luck and please keep us updated on your progress!

Welcome to Reef 2 Reef!!

From the options above... the Reef Octopus are pretty darn solid.

Thanks for taking the time, and hope you feel at home... :)

When y’all suggest the reef octopus, which line? Classic or a higher one? Looks like the only one in my price range is the classic but that doesn’t have the adjustments for the pump, DC controls like the aqua excel at the same price point. Will I be ok wo it? Also, is the 110 sufficient or should I go w 152 due to the high waste of eel?

Thanks for the help and I will post pics once it’s not so plain lol....

Apparently, after checking dimensions of my sump, I can only fit particular models. Now I am down to these:

1) reef octopus essence 130 $299
2) reef octopus classic 110sss $224
3) reef octopus classic 150sss $274
4) bubble magnus curve 5 $234

I’m worried the 110 may be undersized. Leaning away from bubble magnus Bc of 9-11 inch water level recommended, mine is 7.5”. Is the essence worth the difference in price?

The Eshopps S-120 is my choice. Very very quiet and literally no breaking time. Its footprint is 5.5" X 7". Large collection cup. Bubble plate is amazing. High tech. Comes apart very easily for cleaning. Transparent venturi so you can see any buildup of precip. Really no competition with the others.
