Hello everyone! im drowing in learning all this material. The most recent question is about filtration. Any good resources out there on what to put into your filters for a salt tank?
Welcome to the REEF :)

this is what "bing" says...
Based on web search results, there are different types of media that you can put in a saltwater filter, depending on the type of filtration you want to achieve. The main types of filtration are mechanical, biological, and chemical.

  • Mechanical media is any material that physically traps debris and particles from the water, such as filter floss, sponges, or pads. Mechanical media should be cleaned or replaced regularly to prevent clogging and reduce waste buildup.
  • Biological media is any material that provides a surface for beneficial bacteria to grow and break down ammonia and nitrite, such as bio-balls, ceramic rings, or live rock. Biological media should not be cleaned too often or too harshly to avoid disrupting the bacterial colonies.
  • Chemical media is any material that alters the chemical composition of the water by removing or adding certain substances, such as activated carbon, GFO, or resins. Chemical media can remove pollutants, odors, colors, metals, phosphate, nitrate, and medications from the water. Chemical media should be replaced periodically when it becomes exhausted or saturated.
You can use a combination of different media in your filter to achieve optimal water quality for your saltwater aquarium.
