Why does my 3.5 bubble magus protein skimmer overflow when I plug it in? It is like an avalanche of water! HELP!!

Foam or water overflow? If water is overflowing then the air way is probably partially blocked. If foam is overflowing then something in the water is causing it and will eventually foam itself out if you empty it very often for a couple hours.

I am not totally familiar with that skimmer but here's a few things to check or do to try and fix your issue. Internal skimmer like the nac 3.5 have a recommended water level that they are supposed to run in if your skimmer is too deep that could cause the overflow. From a quick search the level for that skimmer is 8-10 inches. If you are deeper than that you will need to raise the skimmer. You can use eggcrate to do this. Skimmers also have an adjustment to set the internal water level. On your skimmer it is the white pipe that comes up the side. The internal water level is set by turning that pipe. I believe there are numbers on the bracket that holds the pipe. If it is a new skimmer it may just need to be "broken in" let it run and overflow back into the sump for a while and that may help as well. New skimmers can be a little temperamental at first. Hope this helps some.
I see this is your first post. You're in the right place to have your questions answered as there are countless people here with a huge wealth of knowledge. If you have any other issues with your skimmer after trying those thing just ask again you will get it figured out.

Good Luck

It is water spewing out. I checked the tubing. I've taken it off and washed it in vinegar. It is a new skimmer, I have a 55 gal. tank If I have it wide open, it overflows foam and water. I don't know what else to do. I added longer tubing for the over flow so I could use a larger container, but nothing seems to matter. I know I am doing something wrong, but I don't know what it is. It is a new skimmer and I know it has to "break" in, but I didn't expect it to empty my tank!
Thanks for any help or suggestions,
