Opinion's needed plz. I have read alot about carbon filters and they say NOT to use them. Is this true? I have a 27g tank and have 4 blue legs hermit crabs and 3 micro stars. What else would be good for a cuc? And how many??

You can run a carbon filter if you wish. Just make sure you rinse it out really well before using it.
snails and hermits are generally considered good CUC. Couple dozen of each would work nicely.

I use carbon in a big media bag in my return. I find this more to my liking than running it in a reactor. GFO i run in reactor. I see no real reason running a small bag of carbon would hurt. My opinion...

There are some studies that show carbon will absorb essential minerals and deplete the levels. There are also some studies that suggest carbon fines can be detrimental to fish and cause lateral line disease. However, consensus is that the benefits outweigh the risks. Just rinse the carbon well before use to get rid of the carbon fines, and do regular water changes with quality salt to replace minerals.
There are some reefers that will run carbon only intermittently just to clear the yellow coloration of the water and avoid the bad effects. I have a mixed reef, and coral chemical warfare is a constant reality. So, I run GAC (granular activated carbon) continuously, and have done so for 4 years. No ill effects that I can see.

in my old 38 gallon i used carbon i a canister for about 3 years never a problem but i mainly had clowns and softies. i had an BTA for 2 years in the tank and he grew huge and split into 4.
