Im looking to start my first saltwater tank and have questions, and need help. Of coarse Im trying to keep cost down as much as possible but do understand you get what you pay for. This will be a starting tank to see how I can manage it and keep it up, and also see how the kids like it. I have a 30 gallon corner tank with a stand already. I would like to go bigger but don't have much more room and hard to find good deals on a corner tank right now, Ill keep looking though. Im confused on the sump process, I would like to run a algea scrubber which I understand how it works and such. What else do I need? My tank don't have any holes in it so I guess I basically need help in setting up the sump. I would like to try just a scrubber only tank. But if you think I need other equipment then Im all ears. I just get confused on the way the sump is suppose to be set up and how it gets flow into the sump and how the sump is suppose to be filtered. I think once I have this understood I can continue my research with all the other pieces I still need to buy.

Would like to have maybe 4-6 fish, and a few coral. I don't like a over crowded tank. Just live rock with couple coral and fish.

I didn't mention lights, or powerheads but think I can get that on my own. Just need help with my filter area right now. Thanks

Scrubber on a 30g tank is all you should need as far a nutrient removal goes, well that and the occasional water change.
This is the guy to help you with the scrubber

Will I need any other filters? Or will that be it? And how will I get flow down to the scrubber from the tank, I'm sure these are very basic noob questions but literally everything I read or watch is about the equipment, hardly see the plumbing.

hang on back filter, liverock, and if youre fancy a scrubber and you should be good to go.
def with madness on his assessment.

actually wouldnt be a bad idea to hang the scrubber on the hob filter. there is also one that clips to the side of the tank.

Skimmer and algae turf scrubber,Turf scrubber will stop any algae from growing in the DT skimmer will remove fish waste.

Some excellent answers given and welcome to R2R!
You have found the right place for answers and also don't forget a tank build thread!

Not saying anything contrary to what has been said above, but thought I'd give you a link to the basics of sumps. It's a three part series and explains things pretty well. Again, not saying it's required, but you asked for information, and I found this useful when I was getting started.

Good luck and welcome to the addiction...I mean hobby!

while i wont disagree with this. you dont "need" it in a 30 gallon tank.
if someone bites the bug and craves the addiction, that lil piece will definitley aid in their journey.

i think too many people are disillusioned when everyone recommends skimmers and uv and dosers and all this garbage that is not necessary for success.

my 300 gallon system has no protein skimmer. and i keep sps.

infact. no sps dies in my system except by my own actions/inaction. pretty powerful statement dontya think?
