All experienced are encouraged to add things need for someone to get started...
1.A tank, theres lots out there keep in mind if your new it's better to stay small. id say a 20 gal. to a 55gal.
2. A tank stand, or a strong table like structure that can support a lot of weight.
3. A tank top or lid, this helps keep things out of your tank, but its not a necessity.
4. a well made filter, theres a few types of filters out there. there's the H.O.B.'hang on back', the canister,the sump. if your going with a small tank like 20-40 gal. most people use a h.o.b. and if your setting up a 20 gal. tank is doesn't hurt to get a filter for a 40gal. but do your research to find out what you need.
5. lighting , there's florescent, metal halide, and l.e.d. '5thpoint revised''
6. substrate 'aragonite' this is the tanks bed or some just sand. but do not use hardware store sand. use pet-shop bought aragonite.
7. rocks and decor, rocks are another thing to ask a pro about. some rocks are ok in the marine tank ans some are not. the best is called dragon stone its porous shaped uniquely. most pet shops have rocks.
8.synthetic sea salt, this is another pet store find or buy it online. you wanna mix your water in a clean bucket or plastic barrel.after its mixed and ready use a small air line piece of tubing to siphon it from mixing tub to tank. that's one way. you dont want the water to salty or not salty enough. so your gonna need a tool to measure the salinity. theres the hydrometer,the refractometer, and others. the hydrometer is the cheapest but if you get this get one made by fluval or instant ocean.
9.LIVE ROCK - is one way to help build an ecosysten and have places for your fish to play/hide ect. after your water is in the tank.live aragonite is another option that helps to build up an eco-system in the tank. or you can get both.
10. light timer, these are cheap and great if you dont wanna have to turn the light on and off..wal-mart has timers as low as 3.75
11. air-pump, this will put oxygen in the water for your livestock.
12. a heater, you may and may not need one of these.
there are other things i have failed to list so read other threads and ask questions.
