I see everywhere that it say to hook up the a router. Can the system be plugged straight into my laptop or do I need to get it to the router/modem? Thanks

to actually control it from the Dashboard program or Fusion it needs a direct internet connection via a router. if you only want to control it from the Display then it doesn't need internet at all. The only thing plugging it directly to your laptop is for is to upgrade firmware if it isn't plugged directly into a router, like if you had it on a Wifi extender.

I messed with my Neptune controler today for 3 hrs or so and got it updated and can not figure it out. If I hook lights up to it and program pumps and such it should cycle the the lights just like the pumps will be working. Will this work? I can't hook it up by the tank until I can get wireless for it. Thanks

I'm an IT guy and I'm not a big fan of WiFi for anything critical.
If possible it's best to run a cable from the controller to your router.

As far as programming get the 'Comprehensive Reference Manual'
Take the time to read it and learn the advanced commands.

The Apex is a powerful controller and very flexible.

Yes every time I watch a vid or read about it I learn more. So much it can do its kinda shocking.
