New to Saltwater tank

So I finally talked my husband into doing a saltwater tank. He has done freshwater tanks many times and is amazing at it, but we are both nervous starting the saltwater tank. We have a 55 gallon tank and would like to do reef and fish. We hAve no clue where to start...please somebody help us!

So cool that you two are in it together! This might seem like a strange comment, but many of us reefers only get partial support from our significant others. A reef/fish tank gets a lot of attention. I don’t think anyone can deny a decent tank’s lure, but some people focus on the upkeep and the time it takes. They may reserve any complements for very special things or offer them on accident. Attention to the tank is something wee reefers enjoy!

I hope you like to tinker? This is what someone asked me early on. Are you both engineers? You will be. Be resourceful. Read blogs and make your own decisions. Be patient, a good saying that is not my own goes a little like this... “nothing good in reef keeping happens quickly, only bad things happen quickly.” Or something like that.

Make all maintenance as simple and quick as possible. That is my goal with a second tank. Spend money on simple.

Please ask me any questions that you have. I’ve got many reasons to pay it forward as this community can be very generous.

One of the things I would suggest would be to take a look at what fish interest you and then plan around that. Generally bigger is better with saltwater tanks, both in terms of keeping water perameters stable and giving you more options for stocking your tank. I would spend some time at www.liveaquaria.com researching fish (and figure out what you would like), pay close attention to the recommended minimum tank size, whether or not they are reef safe (some fish eat corals and inverts), the care level (you will want to stick to the Easy to Moderate care fish for your first go around) and Temperament (ie Peaceful, Semi-Aggressive or Aggressive). You can sometimes mix peaceful with semi-aggressive depending on what it is, but generally the aggressive fish need to be kept exclusively with other aggressive fish. The reason that I say you should research the fish is that is the biggest determining factor in terms of tank size. For corals water perameters, placement and lighting are generally the most important.
