Ok so this is probably a very stupid question, but how big of a sump should i have for the 100G? Also, I see all these tanks with sumps that are "pre drilled" I am not too keen on drilling into my tank... Lol

My current sump is 22 x 15 x 15 and it has about 15 gallons of water in it. What most do is purchase a glass tank at petco when the have a dollar per gallon sale. Then find a glass person and have them cut sections of glass for baffles and silicone them in place.

I went with a CPR overflow instead of drilling. I like these overflow for the reason that they do not use the traditional siphon tubes but a pump to keep the siphon.

Have you considered trading 100 gal. tank in for an all one tank. A littles easier first tank for some. Innovative Marine makes a good variety of sizes. Red Sea also has some. Just a thought. You will have a blast either way.

The only stupid questions are those not asked :) especially true in this hobby! I don't know the exact size recommendations other than the bigger, the better (at least in my opinion). As far as minimums... you want to ensure its capable of handling around 10x turnover of tank volume per hour with enough space that it will not overflow when your return is switched off. I am using a red sea reefer 350 sump on my 75 gallon tank (I think it's about 25 gallons) and it does the job I need it to. As far as drilling your tank, I would highly recommend it. If you don't feel comfortable doing it see if a LFS will. I wouldn't want to deal with a hang on overflow personally...

Oh, and welcome! It's great to have you here. This is a great place to be :)

Welcome! Looks like your getting a lot of good info, my biggest suggestion is get an RO/DI system! Best of all they are on sale right now on bulkreefsupply!

Yes! I'm getting one before starting to get the equipment for the actual tank. I'm on well water, and as good as my freshwater tropical fish and my cichlids do, I'm not chancing that it would be fine for salt!
