About a month ago I got 2 pieces a montipora confusa and a yellow anacrapora.

At the lfs when they showed me the pieces the undersides not getting light didn't have fluorescence color. This was a shock to me as a newb and first time seeing sps pieces.

Is this normal for undersides away from light to not fluorescence under blues?

called shading, does happen and even yhough you mat center a given piece, it still hapens

Yes, Normal.
And to get light to reflect back up is hard. Some yes, but not so it won't happen.
