So I was thinking about starting a saltwater tank and have been reading about it online and saw somewhere to check craigslist and see if you could get a whole setup, pre-cycled to really start off right. So I checked and sure enough there is one for sale in my area... this is it:
Complete Saltwater setup with Fish/everything!
I wanted some more experienced saltwater tank owners to give me a suggestion if this is a good idea or not? It is only 40 gallons, and it does not use a protein skimmer and seems like a pretty basic setup, should I just avoid this and try starting fresh or do you think this is a good idea? Thanks!! PS the guy sellin it said he has had it for 2 years and it does fine, he changes 20% water a week.

I personally would want to start fresh on my own. The tank does look like it has been taken care of though........only issue is there are a lot of large fish that probably shouldn't be in a 40 gallon tank.

+1
the tank you linked too is 40g and has a medium trigger and large tang. Not a good choice.
my .02

I know... I kind of want to buy it and just give the fish to my LFS or list them free for pickup on craigslist.. the tank looks like it would be good for me as a beginner ... but I could start my own for around the same price I feel like... I don know..

Yeah that tank is not nearly enough for all of those large fish. You could probably sell the fish and make some of your money back and get a good protein skimmer

Best advice get the biggest tank you can afford.

I told him I did not want the fish and he said a guy came and looked at it that day and actually was only interested in the fish so I said perfect !! He is going to sell the lionfish (I might get stuck with the others but I will just give them to LFS or free for pickup on craigslist) and i'm getting the tank w everything in it and all his accessories and supplies for $400. So it worked out. I'm picking it uo next week after my stand comes in. So excited! I'm sure I'll come up with lots of questions for you all as a beginner :)

Well with freshwater my upgrades went really fast, like 1.5 gallon, 5 gallon, 10 gallon, 20 gallon in 2 months haha. But Saltwater is too expensive for upgrades and a lot more trouble. I like this tank it's a good size. I have a firefish, clown, and hi fin goby in there, The fish have been in there 7 days today... all alive and well. :)

Here is some :)

Congrats. Looks like a good start. Just take it slow and don't make to many changes at once.
