hello as you can see I'm new to the saltwater hobby, and honestly I'm very excited. I need some help/advice. i recently bought a 35 gallon tank and i decided to start a reef tank. YES, i know it can be quite expensive and its okay since I'm deciding on taking my time and not buy everything at once. The tank i bought it came with 100w heater(aqueon), canister filter(fluval 150), and powerhead(aqueon). I was thinking of adding a skimmer and ive done some research and read somewhere that a tank my size don't "really" need a skimmer as long i do 25%-30% water changes weekly. i also found out that my main filtration would be my live rock, but if y'all could give me any tips on what would be a good filter since I'm thinking of changing the one i have already. I plan on having two clown fish at the moment i don't want to overstock as the aquarium is not to big, any tips on good corals. What would be good recommendations for skimmers, lighting, live rock etc.... and do i need a sump for my tank size? THANK YOU!!

Ditch the canister get a sump,
Drill your tank and set it up that way it will help you in the long run if you can't drill get an overflow box

As far as corals go you're not there yet so don't worry about it.

What is the powerhead rated for?
What ligjts do you have on your tank? Need more information to help you out

First off welcome to Reef2Reef!!!

nice start up on the tank! we have some amazing pinned threads to help you out check out this page http://www.reefedition.com/291/

i dedicate my tank to my clownfish and am more than happy to help you along the way. dont hesitate to ask me anything!
i love having a sump cause it gives me more freedom than a conventional canister filter but its all what your budget and space allow,

best of luck

I was thinking of doing the overflow instead of drilling. For the power head I have the Aqueon 950 6.3watts and as lighting I have standard light once I get more into the coral I'm thinking of getting something better.
What's the best way to make saltwater? I was thinking on first buying the water from my local pet store

Welcome and I 2nd a sump over a canister filter. You'll be much happier and always equipment to be hidden in it rather the display. Also is it a powerhead or a flow pump there's a difference. A powerhead is useful for water change but not good for flow in the tank. Need information on lights ect to help more. When starting corals mushrooms and soft corals are starting corals.

Thank you. And yes I'm planning on doing a sump.. Any tips? Is it better to do it your self or buying one? And as in budget I don't have a budget since I'm plan on taking my time on trying to get everything ready and not buy everything at once and having to be on budget.

The convenience of having a ro/di is worth the cost. You're able to have water available anytime for emergencies even if stores closed. You're in better control of the quality of the water used also.

It is a power head over flow.. And at the moment I just have a standard purple lighting but I would like recommendedations on lighting, again I'm in no budget taking my time on this. I've seen a lot of people use the T5 and T8

ok now to answer some of your questions.
If you're handy you can make your own sump for a fraction of the cost of a pre-made sump. there are even kits on ebay with pre-cut glass for you.
as for the water, if you plan on mixing your own you will need to buy a RODI unit some of our sponsors on Reef2Reef make fantastic and affordable units so check them out, i feel you run a risk with LFS water cause you really dont know when they changed our their Membranes and filters so you run the risk on not pristine waters. (then again if you dont keep up on your own rodi unit the same will happen)

personally i feel the echotech radions are the way to go in terms of lighting and control. but you really need to research what light suits your needs

Thanks a lot.. I will look into making my own sump. I'm pretty sure can find some good videos on YouTube. And definitely will check on that RODI unit..

Thank y'all for helping out!! :) im sure y'all see this type of questions all the time. But thank you

+1 on RODI unit. BRS has a great unit. Also agree with everyone on sump. Sounds like you've done your research. Have fun and welcome!

Thanks for the tip.. I saw the RODI unit POQ-4B-50.. I read some pretty good review for it ? What do you think about that unit? You think it might be good for my tank size? I was reading and it said it does up to 50-65 gallons daily, my tank is only 35 so i think it will do just fine just to start. Maybe once I get more into it I can upgrade or something.
