New to the hobby

Hello

How did you set up the tank?

I actually purchased it used from my lfs. I put 10lbs of live rock in it and 20lbs of sand. I used the stock foam block ( I haven’t bought the media shelf yet) and put Purigen and Phosguard in it. After that I pretty much let it cycle itself naturally. It was my first tank and I figured I would go slow with it to understand how it works.

However, now I’ve been reading and looking into the pure ammonia start process. It seems interesting and I’m curious on how well it works. So that might be my next step.

So I’m thinking about adding a snail and a Zoanthid. Any thoughts on the type of snail? I’ve been reading and researching and I’ve come down to either a Trochus snail or a Nassarius snail.

Nassarius would probably starve unless you fed it fish food. The Trochus would probably also starve if there’s no algae. You might consider adding a small fish first. At that point you will have to be prepared to do water changes. I’m not extremely experienced with saltwater tanks this small so can someone else pipe in?

I also have to say this just in case you didn't know: Topping off the water in a saltwater tank is really important. It will be even more important with a tank that is as small as yours. And remember to use freshwater when topping off.

So today is the third day in a row. My levels were

Ammonia 0.0
Nitrites 0.0
Nitrates 10

I’m feeling like I should be able to call the tank cycled.

I don’t know if anyone else has waited for multiple consistent tests, but I feel like you can’t confirm anything if the tests can’t be repeated with the same results...

Thoughts?
Welcome! The advice I read on here is awesome! Everyone is super nice and eager to help!

Freshwater = rodi, NOT tapwater.
